Out at Glovers Reef Atoll, the flats around the islands, with the exception of North East Caye, absolutely teem with bonefish. Schools of 100 to 150 fish are common with the average fish running between three and four pounds. Much larger bones are regularly caught by our clients. There are also several large schools of bonefish that inhabit the deeper water (8-10 feet) at the northern end of the reef. They can be difficult to find, but when you do, it’s a spectacular thrill. The grass flats on the western side of the reef offer good numbers of permit on the incoming tide. Be prepared by having two rods loaded, one with a crab pattern, the other with a streamer or deceiver, and wire leader, as there are a lot of good sized barracudas that lurk on the edges of these flats.
For our Blue water fly fishing guests, both the Southern and Northern Elbows offer outstanding action. The cut at the north-eastern tip of the atoll is an
excellent place to “chum and pitch” flies as is cut just north of Long Caye. And just a half hour south by boat, the rich fishery of the Gladden Cut and elbow will produce excellent results.
