Fishing Report - August 7th, 2006

Northern

The summer time heat has really brought out some of the best fishing of the year. The bonefishing around San Pedro is excellent right now and one of my boats earlier this week hooked 20 bones in about 5 hours of fishing. The prize was a big fatty weighing about 5 pounds, which made 4 spectacular runs in about 5 inches of water. The tarpon are all over the place right now but the best bet is the mainland flats, which is about an hour by boat form San Pedro. These sand flats are the only place I’ve ever heard of where you can wade for tarpon. We had a guest hook 8 and land 3, all while wading. The fish ranged between 15-35 pounds. There are lots of good tarpon around Hicks Caye right now and we are consistently finding fish all the way down to Gallows Point, south of St. Georges Caye. The permit fishing in Northern Belize has been excellent for the past couple of months and some very big fish have been landed by our clients. This fish was taken while wading in about 3 feet of water, north of San Pedro.

Hot Flies on this Trip:

1) Tarpon - Anything with Flash

2) Permit - Spawning Shrimp

3) Bonefish - Gotcha size 4-8

Southern Belize

The flats between Dangriga and Placencia have been full of tailing permit of late. This new moon (August 5th) has brought the fish from outside the reef up onto the flats to feed in excellent numbers. The water temp on these flats has been a little higher than normal over the past 2 weeks but it hasn’t seemed to keep the fish from feeding. 50-75 fish on average are being seen on an incoming tide. The tarpon are being hooked in several of the usual spots off the Placencia coast. Spider Caye, Jacks Caye, and Rendevous all have good sized fish at the moment. Bonefishing around Water Caye has been very good with some very large fish being caught off the back flat. The south edge Coco Plum Caye produced two huge fish a couple of days ago. This fish was taken on a tan Crazy Charlie after several other flies were refused. The tuna fishing off of Water Caye has been great and guests have reported seeing numerous dorado hanging on the edges of the weed patches. No hook ups though!

Hot Flies on this Trip:

1) Tarpon - Gummy Minnow size 1-3/0

2) Permit - Olive Merkin size 4

3) Bonefish - Crazy Charlie tan/pink/white size 4-6
