Down
in Southern Belize, situated at the end of a 20-mile long sand peninsula,
lies the little fishing village of Placencia. This very laid back town
of 800 is the perfect backdrop to a week of fly fishing in the Caribbean.
The town has numerous bars and restaurants, all within an easy walk of
each other, and there is plenty to do for the non-fishing partner. Placencia
has been welcoming anglers for years and the town is a friendly mix of
old and new. The hurricane of 2001 really took its toll on some of the
older buildings in town, but life is back to normal now and guests will
have to look hard to see any of the residual damage that's left over.
We
book out guests into Easy Living Suites,
which is located right in the heart of town and about 20 yards form the
ocean. Each brightl decorated suite has 2 bedrooms, a comfortable living
room with cable television, and a full kitchen and bar area. The suites
are large and roomy with plenty of space for gear and anything else a
fly rodder might travel with. We highly recommend this location because
of the spacious quarters. It's like being at home! Placencia
was put on the fly fishing map because of the permit fishing on the flats
north east of town. And rightly so! These flats are excellent forthose
interested in wading for their shots at this weary fish and anglers come
from a round the world to test their skills here.
For those serious about tarpon, the winter months (December, January,
February, March) are usually your best when fishing out of Placencia.
The huge mangrove estuary to the west of town is an excellent fishery
and one that has remained largely untouched by angling pressure. For those
unfamiliar with this type of backcountry fishing, it's a great way to
spend a couple of days.

Juvenile
tarpon, snook, and even permit can be found in this dynamic ecosystem.
And it's a great back up plan if the wind is howling out on the flats.
Guests can also access
the productive Monkey River area from their base in Placencia. And further
south, the prolific Punta Ycacos Lagoon can be fished by those who don't
mid leaving at first light to start their day.

Everyone has
heard how difficult it is to land a permit on a fly rod but with the numbers
of fish you'll see out of Placencia, your odds of catching a permit are
greatly increased.There
are also many resident populations of tarpon that live year round off
the coast with the average fish weighing between 30 to 80 pounds.
